About Miss America Organization Scholarships
The Miss America Organization is one of the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance, helping young women all across the country to reach their dreams and educational goals.
About Miss Napa County Scholarship Program
Miss Napa County Scholarship Program is now in its 33rd program year, as an official local preliminary to Miss California / Miss America. Our county scholarship program is a not-for-profit organization, administered and carried out by an all volunteer committee, who facilitate the provision of educational scholarships to young women of Napa County. Providing scholarships is the major component of the Miss Napa County Scholarship program.
Each year, the amount of scholarship funding is supported by Napa County business sponsors and individual donors. This funding support has been providing significant scholarships to all Miss Napa County scholarship program candidates.
Committee members and other community volunteers provide enriching experiences and training for scholarship program participants in areas such as resume preparation, interview, poise, image, public speaking, and community service. Participants are also provided an opportunity for artistic expression while performing an individual talent, such as dance, vocal, musical instrument, monologue/acting, gymnastics, or other creative performance.
Our scholarship organization promotes volunteerism and community service in Napa County. A notable contribution to the personal growth of program participants is the individual platform, where participants actively address issues of importance to them and our community. We help candidates identify Napa County non profit organizations where they can put their platforms into action through community service. We also offer candidates a one day volunteer activity for Project Santa, a Napa Active 20/30 Club charitable event for Napa County children.
Miss Napa County Scholarship Organizaton and program participants actively support Children's Miracle Network, which is the Miss America' Organizaton's National platform. This directly benefits Napa County's nearest children's hospital and research center and the scholarship program.

Scholarships The Miss Napa County competition is based on total individual scoring by an impartial panel of certified judges, who travel to Napa for the program, and two impartial Napa County "celebrity" judges. Each candidate is scored individually in relation to the scoring criteria. There is no comparative scoring. The scholarship program committee ordinarily establishes a baseline scholarship award goal for every candidate in the program, then build the top five scholarship awards and additional awards based on actual scholarship fund results. The annual scholarship fund drive is conducted by scholarship committee volunteers from our community. In addition, there is a voluntary contestant sponsor program that serves to increase individual scholarships, the overall scholarship fund, and community awareness of the value of our local scholarship program.
Phases of Competition Personal Interview - 25% Lifestyle and Fitness - 15% Artistic Expression in Talent - 35% Presence and Poise in Evening Wear - 20% On Stage Question - 5% PERSONAL INTERVIEW Each contestant participates in an individual 10-minute press conference-style interview with our panel of judges. There are typically 5 to 7 judges on a panel. Contestants are questioned on their background as presented by them on their fact sheet, their educational and career goals, their opinions on current events and social issues, and their interests, hobbies and extracurricular activities. Scoring is based on overall communication skills, including intelligence, validated opinions, emotional control, overall first impression and personal appearance. During the interview the candidates are applying for scholarships and applying to be the representative of our scholarship organization during the year, as her schedule allows. Miss Napa County, 2009 proceeds to the Miss California State Scholarship Program, where further scholarships are awarded. LIFESTYLE AND FITNESS Each contestant briefly appears on stage in a one-piece swimsuit and footwear of choice. The Executive Director of our program must approve swimsuits prior to competition. Scoring is based on overall first impression, statement of physical fitness and health, overall physique which is pleasing to her height, weight and bone structure, walk, posture and grace, sense of confidence and presence on stage. The purpose of scoring physical fitness is to promote healthy lifestyles. Our organization's wardrobe closet contains some stage appropriate competition swim suits that can be borrowed. ARTISTIC EXPRESSION (Talent) Miss contestants performs up to a 90 second talent of their own choosing. Some possible talents include all types of singing, dancing, gymnastics, instrumental music, dramatic or comedic monologues, baton twirling , Tae Kwon Do. Other talents that can be performed solo on a stage are also possible. Phone or e-mail us if you have a question about your talent presentation. Scoring is based on contestant's skill and personality, interpretive ability, technical skill level, stage presence and the totality of all elements, including costume, props, voice, use of body, choreography, and entertainment value. PRESENCE AND POISE Each contestant appears on stage in an outfit of her own choosing, representative of what she would wear to a formal "after five" social event. Evening gowns are most appropriate for this phase of the competition. Evening pants or cocktail dresses may also be worn. Scoring is based on overall first impression, sense of confidence, personality and stage presence, walk and posture, appropriateness of attire and sense of attractiveness. Expense of attire is not a factor and attire is not scored. Most often, candidates choose to wear a long gown, Evening/prom gowns may already be in your closet or may be borrowed from the Napa Lending Closet, Miss Napa County Closet, or from friends. Apparel rentals are also an option. ON-STAGE QUESTION The On-Stage Interview phase of competition is designed for the contestant to make an on-stage statement of her interests, opinions and aspirations. Overall "first impression"; charisma and stage presence to be a spokeswoman for the organization will be evaluated. Judges will give special attention to whether or not the contestant answered the question and if she had the commanding presence to make the audience want to listen to her. Whether or not a judge agrees with your opinions is not a factor. Candidates are encouraged to share their own opinions rather than their perception of what a wrong or right answer may be. TOP FIVE FINAL BALLOT From the above 100%, the Top Five Finalists will be named. The Top Five Finalists enter the final round of competition with zero points. The judges will then rank the contestants in the order they individually believe the contestants should finish on a Final Ballot. Each judge ranks the Top Five contestants on a Final Ballot. A first place vote is worth ten points, a second place vote is worth five points, a third place vote is worth three points, a fourth place vote is worth two points and a fifth place vote is worth one point . The total of the Final Ballots determine the outcome . Platform Development In 1989, the personal platform concept was added as part of the competition, with each state titleholder choosing an issue of importance to her and to society. During interview each contestant is evaluated on her commitment to her chosen issue. Examples of platform topics: domestic violence, child abuse, eating disorders, healthy life styles, physical fitness, character education, cancer awareness & prevention, community service, global warming, HIV awareness & education, hospice care, youth mentoring, health education, and other issues chosen by candidates. Often times, candidates have already served in some capacity as community or school program volunteers. Platforms can certainly be in those areas or another. Our organization can help candidates identify community non profit organizations that may be resources for platform development. * New since 2009 year: Miss contestants talent time limit is now 90 seconds in keeping with Miss America national rules.
